Students will receive by email, before they arrive in Canada, a pre-arrival orientation and English placement test.  Students need to watch the orientation videos on their computer or device as very pertinent information is provided on how to adapt to Canadian culture in Canada, differences in education systems, homestay success, Canadian pop culture, how to navigate airports on arrival in Canada and Canadian law.

Then follow these Steps:

Step 1: Download the Kootenay Lake Arrival app

We have created a mobile app entitled, Kootenay Lake Arrival to help you with your pre-arrival preparations. Please make sure to download this app onto their personal devices, phones or ipads.

This App will walk you through the whole process, from when you get off the plane, through immigration to the Arrival Area.
We also give you contact details for our key staff and show you where your arrival orientation will take place

Download the Kootenay Lake arrival app for IOS or Android.

Step 2: In school orientation

All students will receive an in-school orientation on the first day of school in the school in which they have been enrolled. School and program staff will deliver the orientation to new students and help them to be prepared for the rest of the school week and year.  Please see a sample outline for a school based orientation at LV Rogers Secondary School.  Orientations will vary from school to school but all will support students to have a successful start to their school year.  LVR orientation revised.docx

Step 3: Rafting Event

All students will be invited to take part in a rafting event which is one of our most loved activities. The activity is coordinated by our full time homestay contractor and it takes place the first Saturday and Sunday after school begins.   This helps students to enjoy a fun time together with other international students and helps to build self- esteem by doing something that they have never done before.

Step 4: Homestay Orientation

Orientation Outline for First Day.pdfFinally, a homestay orientation will take place in the privacy of the homestay home with the student, host parents and homestay contractor during the first month after arrival. This is a good time to set expectations and make sure the students are comfortable in their new homes.  For any questions about homestay orientation, please contact Kathi Knapik - kathi.knapik@sd8net.sd8.bc.ca
