Orientation

Step 1: Online Orientation

Students will receive by email, before they arrive in Canada, an orientation and English placement test.  Students need to watch the orientation videos on their computer or device as very pertinent information is provided on how to adapt to Canadian culture in Canada, differences in education systems, homestay success, Canadian pop culture, how to navigate airports on arrival in Canada and Canadian law.

Then follow these Steps:

Step 2: In school orientation

All students will receive an in-school orientation on one of the first days of school, in the school in which they have been enrolled. School and international program staff will deliver the orientation to new and returning students and help them to be prepared for the rest of the school week and year.  Please see a sample outline for a school based orientation at LV Rogers Secondary School.  Orientations will vary from school to school but all will support students to have a successful start to their school year.  LVR orientation revised.docx

Step 3: Rafting Event

All students will be invited to take part in a local rafting event; one of our most loved 'monthly activities.' The activity is coordinated by our full time homestay contractor and it takes place shortly after school begins.  For many, this is their first time rafting. The event also highlights the opportunity to form friendships with each other.

Step 4: Homestay Orientation

Finally, a homestay home orientation will take place in the family home - with the student, host parents and homestay contractor present - within the first month of arrival. This is a good time to set expectations and make sure the students are comfortable in their new homes.
