Welcome message from new Superintendent Trish Smillie

By Trish Smillie, Superintendent of Schools/Chief Executive Officer

Dear students, families and caregivers, staff and community members,

It is my pleasure to officially introduce myself to the greater SD8 - Kootenay Lake community. I consider it a true privilege to have been appointed your new Superintendent of Schools. I have been overwhelmed with gratitude and appreciation for the warm welcome I have felt and remain awed by the beauty of this place. What a dream it is to live in the Kootenays!

Over the summer months I have begun work with the Board of Education and district staff. As an educator for over 20 years, I value the programs and services in place and am committed to building on the good work that this team has done to ensure that our current and future students are supported to reach their fullest potential.

As we begin a new school year together in September, I look forward to visiting schools, meeting the staff, engaging with students and their families, and to finding out more about all the great things happening in each of our school communities.

September is typically an exciting time for everyone in education. We also all know that there are challenges that lie ahead. I am sure that many of you have questions about school start-up this year. The Ministry of Education and Public Health will be introducing new health and safety guidelines this month to support a positive, safe, and emotionally supportive return to school.  As soon as we receive these updates, we will inform you of what you can expect. We are eager to see each of our students return for the 2021-22 school year and anticipate a smooth return to classes!

My focus as your new Superintendent will be to support our staff and teachers so that every student can find a sense of belonging while growing intellectually, emotionally, and socially in their learning environment. I deeply believe in an education that focuses on equity and improving success for all students. This is built on providing a foundation of safe and inclusive learning experiences and fostering positive and healthy relationships between staff and students. Every student that graduates from SD8 should feel prepared to pursue and achieve their goals and dreams.

I look forward to serving this school district and the communities for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Trish Smillie – Superintendent of Schools
